Thank you for signing the petition, “Save our Firestations”.  Originally I had planned to present the petition at the London Assembly meeting on 11 September.  But then it became clear that the Mayor was pushing ahead with the closures when he was challenged by Andrew Dismore on his pre-election promise not to cut emergency services. The Mayor’s response was short and pithy: “Get stuffed!”  I know because I was there.  You can see for yourselves:http://news.sky.com/story/1140304/boris-johnson-tells-opponent-to-get-stuffedWhich is what he is saying to Londoners.Fire fighters respond to terrorist attack, flooding, chemical spillage, road traffic accidents, helicopter accidents AND fire.  The Mayor is cutting council tax when 1p per day would save the fire stations.  Fire deaths in London have INCREASED during his term.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7V3eTwvO3X0The Mayor is telling us to “get stuffed” when every borough will see an increase in response times. In his pre-election promise, the Mayor said he would cut waste at City Hall to free up £3.5 billion for services.  Now he is trying to save £28.8 million this year by cutting ten fire stations and making 552 fire fighters redundant.  And it will not deliver greater safety for Londoners. At the meeting on 11 September, when challenged about the fire station cuts, the Mayor rejected any more cost-cutting measures which would avoid closures.  He refused to work to find other solutions. He instead cited other fire services which have experienced cuts, as if the Mayor is intent on some kind of race to the bottom.  In his pre-election manifesto, he said that he would listen to consultations.  He has not listened to the 94% on the fire service cuts consultation who said no to cuts and closures. He said he would listen to the borough councils.  All the councils are against the fire station closures, even Conservative-run Westminster Council.  He has not listened. Not only is he cutting our fire service, but insurance premiums for everyone will increase.  We will pay for these cuts many times over: in the loss of an emergency service, in the loss of fire fighters, in increased insurance premiums and it will come to an increased loss of life.We have until 9 January to do something.  We will never get the stations back once they are gone. Please can you help spread the word by forwarding the link below to your family, friends and colleagues?  We urgently need 100,000 signatures.  If we each get ten signatures, we can do this.http://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/save-our-firestations

Thank you

Artemis
