Big Brother, Whistleblowers Media and Politics

15 Jun

A bit of a rant from me today and also a paradox…I don’t like passing judgement so I behave hypocritically and label it as preference.  I am mindful of this so please bear with me! 😉

The season of Big Brother is back on TV again. I have found this out via comments of people on Twitter.  This has sparked a series of thoughts.  Why do we have these kind of programmes on our screens, they mainly explore the ways  people manipulate each other, often rather unkindly I gather.  Why is this desired viewing by so many I wondered?   Like the Jeremy Kyle type programme, are they viewed by people because they are intrigued by the psychology of human behaviour, or, are they viewed by people who are using them as modern freak shows??

I wonder which came first…the media beginning to air these kinds of programmes and write salacious articles passed off as news, or the desire of subsequent politicians (since certainly the Thatcher years) to begin to demonise groups of people?  If the latter it has been a long term game plan with the media complicit in progressing it.  If the former is it the Media we deserve as a society?

The constant drip, drip, drip of the Media into our brains has anaesthetised many into a soporific state where, with their minds numbed, they are easier to manipulate.  Easy to persuade to buy goods they don’t need, easier to swindle out of the benefits of our society that were put into place after the second world war, easier to milk of their money and easier to deprive of their rights.

Who is benefiting? Where is the profit going? Who are the shareholders? Look at the shoulders which rub together in the corridors of power do any of them truly represent you or are they a mix of politicians, media and corporations?

Take whistleblowers as a group…they are people who see wrongdoing, waste or downright violations of human rights/civil liberties and yet they are portrayed as traitors, organisational terrorists, subversives…are they?  What do they gain?  how many minutes of news coverage or column inches do they get?

Now look at the kiss and tell type story…how often are they on the news?  how much publicity do they get? Some of the people get financial rewards and publicity for sharing but is it news worthy to the extent it is covered?  Is it another way of using smoke and mirrors, feeding the base desire of most people to hear nasty things about another from the comfort of their own home where they can cast aspersions to their hearts content with impunity?

There seems to be no real accountability in any of these professions and yet most other public services are being reviewed and cut back on left right and centre! Other people much more research based than I blog on these issues for example @Alanw47 with his and  whereas I just state my opinions as in Who is worth it etc.,

I read news articles where politicians set themselves up as experts on issues which they have no first hand experience of, I see that they award themselves higher wages and better pensions claim expenses for many things which no other profession would expect to receive and yet their strap line is *we’re all in it together*.  We are told that we need to cut back and are in the midst of austerity yet the main suffering is always felt by the ordinary people, the already poor, the disabled and the vulnerable.  Is this what we expect from our Public Servants?  I don’t!  I know many grass root politicians are dedicated to their communities and genuinely strive to better the lives of ther people living in them, yet the MPs in the House do not  seem to have the same mindset.  They use language and generalisations to direct our thoughts elsewhere.

GeorgeOrwell Liberty

They are not listening to any of the voices that ARE trying to change their attitudes and policies, worse still they subject them to scorn ridicule and persecution aided by the media.

We need to wake up because We are the sheeple  people!

Q:  Where are the modern protest songs?  Have programmes like the X factor smothered music as an expressive art form?

Q:  Where are the investigative journalists exposing corruption not propagating gossip?

Q:  Where are the committed public servant MPs who work for the people, not money, power and self?

Let me know what you think!

Jules 🙂
